GermNews and DE-NEWS

I also volunteer my services as a translator to GermNews, an electronic listserver. This is an extremely interesting and unique project. The tippers and translators of GermNews are located all over the world. There are translators in Germany, America, South Africa, Holland, Brazil, and even New Zealand. Most of us have never met each other and communicate purely over e-mail. The translators are divided into teams. There are four translators in my team (Saturdays). Two of them are located on the West Coast of the US, one is located in New York, and I am in Germany. Two of us are "on duty" each weekend. One translates, and the other proofreads the work and posts it to the listserv. If you are interested in becoming part of a translation team or want to type the news, feel free to contact me or Rainer Mallon.

GermNews

GermNews is an attempt to keep Germans living abroad abreast of political discussions as well as current events taking place in the Federal Republic of Germany. The tippers specially choose news that relate somehow to Germany. The News is sent out daily (except for the occasional technical glitch or force majeure).

DE-NEWS

DE-NEWS is the English version of GermNews, which is translated once GermNews is "published" and therefore appears about one day later (some days more depending on the schedule of the translator and when he or she receives the news).

GermNews mainly consists of radio news that are taped several times a day and then screened and typed out in the evening by a volunteer tipper. Lead articles and commentary from some daily newspapers such as the "Süddeutschen Zeitung", "Schwäbischen Zeitung" and "Südwestpresse" are sometimes typed up as well with the express consent of the newspaper's staff also appear from time to time. Since it isn't a commercial project, we never utilize news agencies such as dpa or reuters.
